Eligibility

Students are only eligible for a university examination if they have attended 75% of their lectures, demonstrations, tutorials or clinical work in in-patients and out- patients.

Professional Examination

The first professional examination is divided in two parts, each to be conducted by the university.

PM&DC Rule

According to PM&DC, students cannot be promoted to the higher classes unless they pass all the subjects of the previous class.

Examinations Rule

Written examinations consist of MCQs and short essays questions. Clinical and practical examinations include standardized multiple station examinations.

Internal Assessments

The scores obtained in internal assessments make up 30 % to the final total score of the candidate. Final university examinations of each subject contribute 90% to the total score, with the students required to secure passing marks on the aggregate of the total marks. For all examinations throughout the medical course the percentage pass marks in each subject is not less than 50, i.e. 50% in theory and 50% in practical.

Basic Sciences

At Islamabad Medical & Dental College, the curriculum is designed around the objective of teaching not just factual information, but also its application. It incorporates a breadth of knowledge encompassing various areas, while ensuring the student is not unnecessarily overburdened. The curriculum strictly follows the guidelines provided by the Higher Education Commission and Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. It integrates all related sciences to promote complete understanding of the subject matter, and later on its practical application towards the solution of real-life problems.

Anatomy: Department of Anatomy is headed by Prof. M. Aziz. Students are taught Gross Anatomy in the dissection hall. Embryology and Histology is taught in lectures, tutorial sessions supplemented by practical laboratory aid. Special attention is paid to the applied aspects of the subject, as well.

Modern teaching techniques like multimedia, internet, CDs and models are used along with conventional methods of teaching. Recently there is resurgence of interest in anatomy by the advent of latest radiological modalities like Ultrasound, Computerized Scanning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Isotope Scanning and Position Emission Tomography.

Physiology: Department of Physiology is headed by Prof. Abdul Majid. In Physiology, students will be taught about the general principles of functions of human body with special emphasis on clinical and practical applications. A comprehensive knowledge pf the normal function of the hyman body is essential for a doctor. Physiology introduces to the sutdents how the different cells, tissues and organs of the human body work together to maintain life. Lectures by senior, experienced faculty, tutorials, small group discussions with modern laboratory equipment will facilitate students in grasping the basic concepts.

Biochemistry: Department of Biochemistry is headed by Prof. Sajid Raza. It is a vital subject of basic medical sciences covering necessary topics regarding chemistry of life and any consequences in case of mutation or deficiency. Students are taught the chemical processes taking place in living organisms. Structure, function and metabolism of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules is studied. Biochemistry has its scope from system to molecular level, as there can be no defined line between biochemistry and molecular genetics. Structure and function of genes is taught to gain knowledge of disease and its effects that include clinical genetics and techniques for gene therapy.

Pathology: Department of Pathology is headed by Prof. Saeed Alam, the backbone of medicine, It helps in bridging the gap between basic sciences and clinical sciences. The Pathology department at IMDC has a strong and vibrant faculty which carries forward the mission of the college with complete dedication in all disciplines i.e. Microbiology, Histopathology, Haematology, Systemic Pathology, Parasitology and Chemical Pathology.

Practical training is carried out at departmental and affiliated hospital laboratories, training facilities included multihead microscope with CCTV and sufficient number of binocular microscopes are available for student use. Pathology museum with a good number of surgical pathology specimens and histopathology slides covering various systems of the body are available.

Pharmacology: Department of Pharmacology is headed by Prof. Iffat Ara. Pharmacology is taught in 3rd year MBBS students. Both the basic & clinical aspects of the knowledge of drugs/medicines are covered. The objective is to enable the medical graduates to prescribe drugs rationally to their patients for cure or primary therapy, suppression of symptoms, prevention & diagnosis of the disease. Moreover, they should be able to monitor drug therapy, detect and manage adverse reactions, over-dosage and poisoning of drugs.

To achieve the above objectives, a highly qualified and experienced faculty caries out the teaching schedules. The students are familiarized with different dosage forms of drugs along with their routes of administration & calculations of doses. Experiments are designed in which students demonstrate the effects of selected drugs on suitable animals / tissues in a well equipped laboratory. The observations are correlated with their clinical uses.

Forensic Medicine : Department of Forensic Medicine is headed by Dr. Nadeem Afraz. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology will cover the legal aspects of medical practice and the legal implications of various medical disorders, in collaboration with the Departments of Pathology, Pharmacology and Hospital Casuality Department. Importance will be given to those legal aspects of medicine which a young medical graduate is expected to face in practical life.

Community Health Sciences (CHS): Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is headed by Brig. (R) Ahmed Khan. (CHS) will focus on the primary health care, determinants of health and disease, research methodology of basic and clinical sciences and the critical appraisal of medical literature. The subject also includes the identification of problems, followed by the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the appropriate course of action.

Behavioral Sciences : will run throughout the five years. The course highlights normal thought and behavioural patterns, psychosocial influences in health and disease, and the application of behavioural science principles towards effective medical practice.
