Pathology is a pivot around which all the clinical sciences revolve. It is a bridging discipline between basic sciences and clinical medicine. Knowledge of this subject is extremely helpful in understanding clinical processes and interpretation of laboratory reports. A good liaison between a clinician and a pathologist is very helpful in diagnosing and treating different diseases.
Pathology is a study of structural and functional changes taking place in cells, tissues and organ that underlie disease. These functional changes can be visualized through use of molecular, microbiologic, immunologic and morphologic methods. Main Branches of Pathology are Histopathology, Haematology, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology. Histopathology is a study of basic causes and mechanisms of diseases, involving the changes in morphology and function of various organs. It helps in the diagnosis of various abnormalities in cells/tissue/organs. Medical Microbiology involves the understanding of pathogenesis of infectious disease, their effects upon the body and their diagnosis by various methods as well as including the defense /treatment against them. Haematology is a study of diseases of blood and lymphoid tissue.
While, Chemical Pathology is a study of chemical basis of disease processes and their application in the diagnosis of diseases. The teaching programme of pathology imparts 500 hours of training, spanning over four academic years. During the first two years. 40 hours have been allocated for integrated teaching, linking basic sciences with pathology. In 3rd year, 260 hours of teaching includes General Pathology (covering the fundamentals of disease processes) and Microbiology (bacteriology including general and clinical, parasitology, virology & mycology). While 200 hours have been devoted for teaching Special / Systemic Pathology including Histopathology and segments of Haematology and Chemical Pathology in 4th year MBBS. Pathology department at IMDC has a strong and vibrant faculty which carries forward the mission of the college, with complete dedication in all the major disciplines of pathology i.e. Histopathology, Microbiology, Haematology & Chemical pathology.
